DVD Web Exclusive -- 1991 PSU Talent Show Pt. II
I am finally starting to edit the footage I have been digitizing for the 15th Anniversary Edition of Cause Dowels. The first video I started on is the PSU Talent Show from 1991. I'm not sure why, but we video taped the whole show. You may remember when I posted on this topic a few months ago that we were not the winning act of this talent show. However, we were also not the only act to lose out the to fab rap stylings of State The Facts.

See previous posting to understand what I am talking about.

State The Facts

In fact, several other bands and acts also lost out this powerhouse. Who were they? Well take a look for yourself.

The first act was a band that you would find playing a college bar or frat house playing covers to drunks. (I'm not saying that is a bad thing. We've all been there.) What impresses me most about this act is:

a) They thought it was a good idea to cover the Ugly Kid Joe hit Everything About You. If you do not remember Ugly Kid Joe, consider yourself lucky. In fact, not only did they think it was a good idea to cover Ugly Kid Joe, they also thought it was a good idea to close with Ugly Kid Joe. As the lead singer makes clear to the audience at the start of the song, "We're gonna leave you now with a little Ugly Kid Joe!" Of course, the audience responds with great applause. This was what we were up against that year: audiences who loved Ugly Kid Joe.

b) You must watch (or skip to) the end where the lead singer jumps into the audience and tries to start a mosh pit, which turns into what I would describe as weird dancing (fighting) with one dude, who apparently is also an Ugly Kid Joe fan.

The second act was a sorority group who put on what can best be described as a skit / lip-sync routine to the horribly wrong song I'm Too Sexy.

The final act (and I should note there were more, but some acts have since been taped over at points) was another cover band, although this time they selected songs that would stand the test of time better than Ugly Kid Joe. For the Web Exclusive I have selected them doing Drain You by Nirvana, a song the audience could care less about. An interesting side note, at the start of the video you'll see the lead guitarist break a string and the singer asks if any of the other two rock acts wouldn't mind lending a guitar for them so they could finish their set. Being the good guys that we were, we stepped up and loaned them a backup guitar.

The Two Shirt Band Video Stills
I am back to digitizing videos for the release of the Cause Dowels 15th Anniversary DVD. I finally got around to dumping down the famous (or infamous) Two Shirt Band Video. This is probably the first video document of Bone Sauce, circa 1991. We had just started a few months before this was shot. It captures us practicing most of our early originals and also recording (on the four-track) new stuff, like The Immoralist. This is still the Does Cows, still a ways away from being Bone Sauce.

Anyway I thought I would post some images from the video shoot. I was going to post some video, but I am not sure what from this is going to make it onto the DVD. So until then, enjoy some classic BS rockouts and hair.

19 Year Old Bram wondering why we've stopped rockin'.

Justice's hair in all of it's feathered glory.

Bram rocking and me adding a note.

Me singing something.

Me singing something else.

Bram and me rockin' out.

Bram and me rockin' out again.

Full band; Justice and Bram doing the KISS tandem rock out.

Its the End of the Month! Time for Cocktail Fridays!
I know. I've been slacking on the blog. Since the DVD project is taking longer than expected I decided to post something else to keep you entertained.

The following is short video I created while testing out a new editing tool. It is a video remix I made using the rich audio soundscape that is Cocktail. Yes, the movie Cocktail. It was going to make a trailer for CockHouse, the awesome sequel to both Cocktail and Roadhouse, but then I took a different path. So welcome to the first of many "End of the Month Cocktail Fridays."

DVD Outtake Web Exclusive - R.I.P John Hughes
Without doubt the work of Hughes was appreciated by The Sauce, being Gen Xers and whatnot. So to pay our respects we present a short clip from the original Cause Dowels documentary. In this scene Bram does his best Ferris Bueller.

(I am only posting exclusive content, so this is the clip unedited.)

DVD Outtake Web Exclusive -- CD Shopping with Bram and Goss
Besides taping band practices and live gigs, Bram and I also recorded a bunch of tape documenting what we did when weren't playing. A lot of that film ended up on the Cause Dowels documentary, but there's a lot that did not make the cut.

While going through the videos I found this little gem of Bram and I going tape and CD shopping at City Lights in State College, PA. Back in 1992, City Lights was one of the many record stores in town, but now it's the last and from what the owner is saying it may not be around next year.

Article on City Lights

I am probably going to add this clip to the DVD, but since what I am posting is supposed to be exclusive to the blog I am adding a few still frames and some director's commentary.

This clip features Bram and I going to City Lights to buy some music. In the footage I actually state why I am there: to pick up a used cassette of Live Skull Live, which I still own. Bram considers purchasing Ka BLOOM! by Flowerhead, who we saw open for the Pumpkins in Chicago just a few weeks earlier.

Since I wasn't sure whether I was allowed to record in the store, I am carrying the camera to my side, which is why it's somewhat blurry. Still it's a nice document of what record shopping was like back in 1992.

Here's the City Lights sign, which as of this writing is still there.

Sign on the front entrance lists what new albums were being released that week. We see some real sounds of the period, such as Phish (at the top of course), Brand New Heavies, Belly, Infectious Grooves, Sunscreem, Ultra Vivid Scene and a Chess Records compilation. There's not one band in the mix that I purchased.

Bram and me recording ourselves in a mirror at City Lights. We're flanked by a Fastbacks poster and an Otis Redding LP. There's also an LP of local favorites, Queen Bee and the Blue Hornet Band.

Curve was touring. Also a cool poster for the album The Sneetches 1985-1991: Sometimes That's All We Have.

A poster for Jesus Jones. I did not think they were around long enough to rate their own poster, but there you go.

Oh record stores, how I will miss you. Here's the full clip, complete with witty banter. (Anyone recognize the tune blaring in the background?)
